Gear drive or belt drive?
Gear drive
Motor → gearbox → coupling → shaft → impeller. Compact, enclosed and robust, and preferred for severe duty. Ratios of about 5.36:1 give 280 rpm, and 3.33:1 give 450 rpm. Gear drive is the only option for dairy, pulp and paper, and distillery service.
Single-stage belt drive
Motor pulley → V-belts → shaft pulley, with the full speed reduction in one stage and no jackshaft. Simple to maintain, and available for oil & gas, FGD, edible oil, water and biogas duties. Pulley sizes are checked for belt rating, guarding and bearing loads.

How a unit is selected
- Define the mixing objective: circulation, blending, temperature equalisation or solids suspension.
- Confirm tank dimensions, internals, liquid levels and the nozzle position.
- Establish the fluid properties: density, viscosity against temperature, and solids or fibre content.
- Select the impeller and estimate power for the duty, then choose the motor rating and shaft speed.
- Check the shaft, bearings, gearbox or belts, and seal against the loads on them.
- Check materials, seal type, nozzle loads and hazardous-area requirements.
- Issue a datasheet and GA drawing for your approval.
